FAQ

WHAT IS ALTAR?

Altar is a clothing company and retail store with a brick-and-mortar location in Portland, OR. We initially opened a business in 2010 (under another name in the same retail location) with a focus on supporting independent artists from our immediate region, and by 2015 when we became Altar, we had grown that vision into the beautifully curated and ever-changing space it is today. We celebrate independent manufacturers and artists from across North America, with a focus on the stories that are woven into their work. We use the phrase, “objects with meaning” because we believe in sharing the unique stories behind these pieces.
Our clothing brand, Altar Houseline, is proudly made in America using deadstock materials and serves size gradations from size small to 6XL.

ONLINE ORDER POLICIES

Many of the products available online are also on display and for sale at our brick and mortar location in Portland, OR. Our small team does our absolute best to maintain correct inventory levels, although sometimes mistakes will happen.

In any event that something is purchased online and we don't have the product in the store to fulfill the order, we promise to do everything in our power to communicate with you quickly.

We have the ability to offer a refund in these rare cases, or process exchanges for store credit.

SHIPPING
We ship twice weekly according to volume of sales.

Altar is not liable for lost or stolen packages and releases responsibility upon transfer of order to the shipping carrier. Altar will not be held responsible for additional shipping charges incurred if packages are returned to our store due to customer absence, errors in shipping addresses or package refusal. If you refuse any shipments from Altar, you remain responsible for all original shipping charges, and the cost of returning the package to us. We will subtract this amount from your merchandise credit, if any.

IMPORTANT

Many items in our digital marketplace are shipped directly from the maker! This means you may receive your order in multiple shipments (if you are ordering more than one item) and if it is being made-to-order, please be mindful of the designer's individually allocated lead times, which can sometimes be up to one month! We are proudly connecting our customers and the designers we love in a direct way in the hopes that we can support other small businesses in tandem with our own! Items that are shipped directly from the makers will be noted in the copy! Please note that made-to-order items are not eligible for return, and made-to-order items that are currently in production cannot be canceled.

In an effort to respect the craftsmanship, time, and cost of producing work made by any of the artists we carry, we adhere to the policies outlined above without exception.

Please keep in mind that any inquiries about shipping delays, packages lost in transit or not delivered must go through USPS. We are not responsible for packages that are lost or damaged in transit.

Altar Houseline pieces may take a bit longer to make and ship because we sew them to order, especially for you! If you have any size specifications for this brand, you can even put in a note for custom sizing!
